Things That Make You Go HMMMMM!!

Yesterday I bought some Neapolitan ice cream. This morning I was wondering why vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream together in one container would be called Neapolitan?? Is that the only flavors available in Naples?????

  1. From Yahoo. The flag of Naples, Italy (the residents were call Neapolitans) consisted of three horizontal stripes, White, Red and Black. In the early 1800's.
I guess someone thought that a block of three layer ice cream looked like that flag. White - Vanilla, Red -Strawberry, and Black - Chocolate. This three layer style of ice cream was very popular in the mid-late 1800's.

  2. I googled it and on Wikipedia it mentioned it representing a flag, but I knew it wasn't the Italian flag, so it didn't make sense to me. Now that you say the Naples flag had white, red and black, that makes sense.

  3. I just enjoy it and never bother to wonder about it at all.

  4. According to the very same Wikipedia article, that Napoleonic flag was in use only for two years! That's even stranger!
Naturally, none of the images on the article even picture that order of colours.
So, I guess the main takeaway from this is that salespeople will say anything for a sale and that may keep screwing with you even beyond the grave..?
