Deja Vu All Over Again

Yesterday at 1:30 in the A.M I was rudely awakened.  The place was all lit up from headlights shining in through the windows and the dog was barking because there was someone beating on the front door.  I came downstairs and there was someone with a flashlight at the door.  It was a cop, the State Police were here.  I opened the door and he said they had gotten a 911 hangup from here.  I said that I hadn't called.  Then he wanted to make sure I was the only one here, so I let him in.  When he tried to use my phone to call the police post, there was a ton of static and it wouldn't work.

The reason I say this is 'Deja Vu' all over again is that the same thing happened last year at our apartment in Hot-Lanta.  Same scenario, middle of the night, cops at the door saying there was a 911 hangup call.  Again phones wouldn't work, so we unplugged them.  An hour or two later, the cops were back saying the same thing and we told them it was impossible because the phones were unplugged.  Question, when the phone fucks up, why does it fuck up and call 911 in the middle of the night??  Why couldn't it do it in the afternoon?????

Anywho, that was about it for sleep as far as I was concerned for the rest of the night.  By the time the cops were convinced it was the phone itself that was screwed up and they left, I was so thoroughly awake I couldn't really sleep again.  I tossed and turned for several hours and when it was about 5 in the A.M. I got up and turned on the coffee pot.  When it got to be after 8, I called the phone company to report the malfuntion.  They at first said they had had problems and worked on the system the night before.  Then I was told the static may be because of the cordless phone.  I went and dug out from storage an old corded phone and when I plugged it in there was so much static that it wouldn't work.  Used my cell phone to call again and report that it wasn't the cordless phone.

That afternoon a couple of guys came to look for the problem with my phone.  One guy opened the service box on the pole and hooked up his test phone.  Then he looked at the line up on the poles and spotted a phone line hanging down from the next pole.  I told him that line used to go to the trailer we used to have on the place, but at one time there was a problem with the phone and the line was cut because no one was living in the trailer and that fixed the problem.  He then checked the wire with his test phone.  He said that the problem was probably that the rain had shorted out that wire.  He then asked if he could drive his bucket truck over by the pole and I said he could. (That there wasn't a septic tank or anything in that area.)  He used the cherry-picker to get up to where the wires were on the pole, disconnected the dangling wire and made sure the connections were good.

That seems to have fixed the problem.  Moral of the story, if you are ever in need of help and the phone doesn't work, you can MacGyver it by shorting out the wires to call 911!!!!!!!!!!!!

Internut TV Update

Had several comments on my last post.  Here I'll answer them.  It wasn't so much of a powerful wind that blew down the antenna, but the combined effects of six months or more of high winds.  According to those that were here during the time I was gone, they had a lot of windy days, more than normal.  With the mast swaying back and forth, it was a case of metal fatigue that broke the pipe at one of the threads, that being the weakest part of the pipe.

Squatlo commented on the good old days pre-remote.  I guess I'm back to that as there is no remote for the confuser and when a program ends, I have to get up and go to the confuser to chose something else to watch.  Altho, my HDMI cable to connect the confuser to the TV is long(12ft) enough that I could have the confuser close enough to reach from my chair.  I have a wireless router so can use the confuser anywhere in the house.

This shows the setup for the TV, confuser and DVD player(under the confuser).  Also shows that there is still construction going on , it never ends!!

As for having the internut in the boondocks, I think it's great.  I remember 10-15yrs ago when all we had was dial-up and stuff would take forever to load.  (Turned watching porn into a chore!!)

A New Way of Looking at TV for Me

The picture below shows the setup I had for a TV antenna complete with a rotor to turn it to tune to the two TV channels I could get over the air.  With the new digital system there were actually 5 channels.  One had a CW channel and an ABC channel, the other had 3 PBS channels, the local one, a HD one and what was probably the West Coast feed as it seemed to be 3 hours behind the HD one.

TV antenna as it looked last year and last month when we got here.
The picture below shows what is left of my antenna setup after the wind blew the antenna down a few days after we arrived here.  I've been kicking myself for not taking a picture of the antenna when it was hanging from the brace and hung up in a tree.  It happened first thing in the morning before I had even had time to have a cup of coffee, so that may explain my lack of foresight!!
What's left of the mast and brace for the TV antenna after the wind blew it down and I took down the parts that came down.
After the antenna came down we were reduced to watching DVDs.  Then we got internut DSL service here in the boondocks UP on the Tundra.  Now we have more options for TV viewing than we have ever had and that includes when we had a satellite dish.

Because we still have Comcast cable in Hot-Lanta, we can watch the shows we could watch on cable (even tho we are 1200 miles away, we can watch online) in Hot-Lanta, just a day or so later.  We have a NetFlix account and and can watch most of the TV shows or movies  they have.  We can only get one DVD from NetFlix at a time, but can watch as many as we want over the intratubes.

Over the summer I will be doing research on what all is available to watch via the intratubes.

Types of FuckingRepublicans

"Republicans Are Idiots And Arguing With Them Is A Waste Of Time!" by Addictinginfo.org had a post on facebook about the 7 types of Republicans, and when I got to the last one I saw what group my cousin belongs in.

Extremely Idiotic Republicans:
These Republicans are Republicans because they think it’s cool. They have a Republican in one of the other groups listed, so they think they know what they’re talking about. They have terrible spelling and grammar but they expect you to believe whatever they say because they are saying it to you.

The reason why this type of Republican is an idiot:
It’s hard to tell if they ever made it past the 4th grade. Most of their posts are illegible. They don’t know anything about their position other than what they have heard their friends say. They think that Republicans are fiscally conservative because they say that they are, and call anyone that doesn’t agree with them sheep. They ignore all historical information that is contradictory to what they say. They are 100% blind to facts.

What to Remember when debating them
No amoun:t of facts or logic will ever convince them that their buddies are wrong. You could be a college professor and they will still think that your opinion isn’t credible. Instead of trying to argue with them try explaining Algebra to your dog. I’m sure it will be much more productive.

Couldn't resist adding two more idiots!!

Back UP on the Tundra

This is a sure sign that I'm back UP on the Tundra.  Did you know moose will eat blackberry brambles??  They pretty well wiped out a patch on the "Ranch".
Part of my entertainment UP on the Tundra.  I refill this feeder everyday.  I only fill it from half full to 3/4s and  they drain it each day.  I have another feeder like this one on the other side of the house and it will last a week with the same amount of liquid.
In the evenings there will be twice as many Hummers at this feeder.  I tried to get a picture with more Hummers in it, but they move so fast, it's hard to get them all in the shot.
